Natural Pest Control

March 02, 20252 min read

If you have a small critter or two occupying your space plopping down on the carpet, raiding cupboards, claiming kitchen counters, band buzzing around outdoor areas you can be forgiven.

No worries, though! We’ve got some amazing all-natural tricks that you can use to repel these unwanted guests.

Natural Pest Control for Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes prefer water, and simply going to any pooled sources (pet bowls, bird baths, kiddie pools) and emptying or discarding every standing source of water (should be done at least twice a week). Planning a BBQ? Toss on some sage or rosemary to repel the mosquitoes. Citronella oil-filled candles placed all over your deck can help wonders, too. For a DIY deterrent, create a mixture of one part garlic juice and five parts water, soak strips of cotton in it and leave them around your patio. Thai Lemon Grass and Marigold plants are great plants that will naturally repel mosquitoes and are beautiful.

For Flies

Flies hate mint, so if you put crushed mint in small sachets around your house, it can serve you well.” Using sweet basil and clover around open food is also a good trigger. Soak a cloth in eucalyptus oil and place it in fly problem areas. Another neat trick is hanging bay leaves, cloves, and eucalyptus from beads of cheesecloth by your windows and doors.

Natural Pest Control for Moths

Moths can be deterred with dried lemon peels. Throw them in your closets or hang them in cheesecloth. You can also create your moth-repelling sachets, made with bay leaves, cinnamon sticks, cloves, lavender and a few other fragrant herbs. Another moth deterrent is cedar chips or cedar oil.

Slugs/Snails

These pests are nocturnal and prefer moist environments. Dan Gill: Water your garden in the morning so it’s dry by evening. Use barriers such as crushed eggshells or wood ash to protect your young plants. Seaweed mulch can also help keep slugs at bay  as long as you don’t target the stems of plants with it. Copper strips around flower pots or beds can help as well. Yes, a little beer in a shallow jar buried to the rim will attract and drown slugs. Another easy deterrent is coffee grounds.
